Title | Are Shul Raffle Ticket Sales Allowed? |
Summary | Are Shul raffle ticket sales allowed? Why not? The concept is brought in Chazal that one should not engage in certain activities lest they encourage youngsters to gamble. Five reasons were given today as to why the case of a Shul raffle might 'not be that bad'. The Teshuvois Chavois Yoir brings down an extremely interesting Shaaloh in relation to a gathering of 12 rather intoxicated individuals, who placed a bet - but the lots seemed unfairly drawn and each time, he paskened that a 're-match' should take place! If the Shul tells me that 'my ticket didn't make it to the pot in time' - am I enitled to ask for a refund? What about if a Moisad launches scratch cards, but knows that all the cash prizes have already been claimed - must they halt any further sales? Am I allowed to use Maaser money to buy a raffle ticket - it's not so simple...! Is buying a raffle ticket considered making Hishtadlus? Reb Yehoshua Shlit"a was once again on top form - and ended with the inspiring thought that the best possible form of Hishtadlus is not to be crooked in business!! Omen! |
