Title Is It Permissible To Spread Bad News?
Summary As today was the 1st Yahrtzeit, Reb Rafi Shlit"a spent the first few minutes of the Shiur reminiscing about his Father O"H, Reb Yehuda Ben Harav Levi Gavriel Halevi ybl"cht, and actually said over several divrei torah of Reb Yehuda O"H. The topic of the Shiur was whether it is permissble to spread bad news. Reb Yehuda had offered his own beautiful answer to a question posed by Reb Shimon Schwab, as to why Tzora'as is compared to snow. The question was then raised (which is discussed in Shulchan Aruch) - may one tell a son that his father has just passed away? On one hand, you would be spreading bad news - on the other hand, you are causing Mitzvos - as the son is now able to start saying Kaddish? According to one opnion, even if the son is already saying Kaddish for his mother and then his father dies, you are still not allowed to inform him of this! Another interesting scenario brought was regarding telling one's colleague that one has seen a rainbow and how, according to some, one must say it in a hint format. A beautiful "Diyuk" was quoted from the Vilna Goan in relation to the Mishna in Brochos concerning one who hears good / bad news. A vort of the Kerem Hatzvi followed and the Shiur concluded with powerful words from Reb Shimshon Pinkus zt"l - this Shiur is well worth a listen..!
