| Summary | Rabbi Moore gave a mini "crash-course" regarding the Halachos of Amira Le'Akum on Shabbos - whilst of course acknowledging that 40 minutes was barely sufficient to 'do it justice'! There are 3 ways how to get out of the problem of benfitting from Maaseh Akum, namely a) Removing the obstacle b) Adding benefit and c) Retaining benefit. Relevant and down to earth scenarios in this regard included: Can I ask my postman to open a letter for me on Shabbos? Can I ask an Akum to turn on my chandelier during the daytime when daylight is coming through in any event? What about a commercial kitchen oven that goes off automatically at midnight (albeit briefly) - can I pass a hint for it to be switched on again? We also learned about what consitiutes an "ill person" and also the definitions (and sub-catgeories) of "Shvus-Dishvus". |
