Title Understanding The Mitzva of Ve'ohavto Le'rayacha Komoichoh
Summary Today's topic was "Veohavto Lerayacha Komoichoh" taken from this week's Sedra. The Shiur was based on the famous Gemora in Yevamos that describes how the 12,000 pairs of Reb Akiva's talmidim met their untimely death due to them not according honour to one another. The Chidda comments how important it is especially during these days of the Omer, to treat each other with an abundance of love and respect. The Bnei Yissoschor very aptly points out that the Gematria of Lev Tov is 49 - days of the Omer! A large part of the Shiur was dedicated to attempting to reconcile the seeming contradiction in the opinion of Reb Akiva - that on one hand he holds "Love thy brother like yourself" - but on the other hand, he is of the opinion (in Baba Metzia) that if there are 2 people but only sufficient water for one - that "your life comes first"?! He went on to explore the opinions of various Rishonim, leading with the Rambam, quoting a beautiful Maharsha along the way. Various other thoughts were then offered, including from the Yesod Veshoresh Hoavoidah and Reb Yosef Shaul Nathanson and the Shiur ended with a beautiful story regarding 2 yidden who both defended each other as neither could bear the thought of the other one being executed and in that zechus they both ended up being saved!
